Le 10 Porte del Futuro

A widespread exhibition on the walls surrounding the historic center of Rome, conceived by Spazio Taverna and promoted by Roma Capitale in collaboration with Zètema Progetto Cultura with the aim of telling the most contemporary face of the city and stimulating new generations to project themselves into the future.

Built between 270 and 275 CE at the behest of Emperor Aurelian, the Aurelian Walls are one of the longest and best-preserved ancient city walls in the world. Along their course, which stretches for about 19 kilometers, the Walls fit the urban road system with gates and secondary passages that throughout history have undergone transformations, closures and new openings. The project proposed by Spazio Taverna invests and transforms ten historic gates of the wall (Porta Flaminia, Porta Pinciana, Porta Pia, Porta Labicana, Porta San Giovanni, Porta Metronia, Porta Latina, Porta San Sebastiano, Porta San Paolo, and Porta Portese) into an open air picture gallery.

Each of the ten doors hosts two banners with works imagining the Rome of the 21st century, created by 10 artists and 10 architectural firms of the latest generations to dialogue live with the general public: the artists’ works are placed at the gates’ entrance while those of the architects are placed at the exit. The artists under 40, either Roman or resident in Rome, were selected by Spazio Taverna based on two criteria: having participated in public exhibitions and being represented by a private gallery. The architecture firm Warehouse of Architecture and Research (WAR), on the other hand, chose the 10 studios of architects under 40 located in Italian cities crossed by the radial roads that start from the gates.
