From 21 to 30 June, Giuseppe Verdi’s three-act masterpiece returns to the stage of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, in a production featuring elegant direction by Sofia Coppola and sumptuous costumes by Maison Valentino Garavani.
Inspired by Alexandar Dumas's (son) play La Dame aux Camélias (1852), the famous opera, with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, premiered in March 1853 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Glamorous Paris is the backdrop for the love story between the courtesan Violetta and the bourgeois Alfredo: the young woman, deeply in love, tries to change her life, only to leave him and spare her family the shame. Misunderstood and hurt by the man, who only later discovers the truth, is by then ill and finally dies after seeing him again.
The production staged at the Costanzi is based on an idea by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti; in 2016, it marked the debut of the talented Sofia Coppola as an opera director, creating a splendid combination of the great Italian tradition of melodrama and the glamour of fashion and cinema.
Against the magnificent sets of Nathan Crowley, a prestigious international cast – Ermonela Jaho, Nadine Sierra and Ekaterina Bakanova (Violetta), Dmitry Korchak, Xabier Anduaga, Antonio Poli (Alfredo), Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Luca Salsi and Misha Kiria (Giorgio Germont) – brings this iconic production to life, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Teatro dell’Opera, conducted by Maestro Francesco Ivan Ciampa, the Chorus and Corps de Ballet of Rome Opera House.
