The Caravaggesque paintings from the collection of the great art historian on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death are on display.
This exhibition is dedicated to the so-called Caravaggesque painters, to whom the great art historian and collector Roberto Longhi dedicated life of study.
The works of Caravaggio's disciples are certainly the most important and significant part of his collection formed around the painting Boy bitten by a lizard, he purchased in 1928.
The exhibition includes about 50 works showing the importance of Caravaggio's legacy and his poetry.
It combines The Denial of Saint Peter, a great masterpiece by Valentin de Boulogne, recently exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at the Louvre Museum in Paris, with works of great importance by artists who have assimilated Caravaggio's lesson, such as Jusepe de Ribera, Battistello Caracciolo, Matthias Stomer, Giovanni Lanfranco, just to name a few of them.
