The 2026/2027 season of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, which takes its title from the famous line "il dolce suono mi colpì" (The Sweet Sound Struck Me) from Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, features a rich program that ranges from repertoire masterpieces to new creations and eagerly awaited returns. From the 20th-century anxieties of Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Bartók, and Bernstein to the great works of Verdi, Donizetti, Puccini, Rossini, and Giordano, passing through the 18th-century works of Gluck and the contemporary works of Nicola Sani, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma offers a journey through the beauty of music and theater.

The season opens on November 27 with Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, a new production marking the debut at the Rome Opera of director Rafael R. Villalobos, with Mariotti on the podium. Among the great directors returning to the Rome Opera are Robert Carsencon with Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride, Barrie Kosky with Dmitry Shostakovich's A Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, and Mario Martone with a new Cinderella at the Teatro Valle. Karole Armitage also makes a major debut with a new Lucia di Lammermoor. We also highlight two young Italian artists recently awarded the Abbiati Prize: Daniele Menghini with a new Trovatore and Andrea Bernard with a new Rondine. The program is completed by the filming of two shows by great directors such as Marco Bellocchio, who is re-proposing Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chénier, and Pier Luigi Pizzi, who is directing Giuseppe Verdi's I due Foscari. Luca Micheletti also returns, both as director and performer, with a new production of Leonard Bernstein's Peter Pan, presented for the first time in Italy on stage. The lineup features some of today's greatest voices, including Anna Netrebko, performing Béla Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle for the first time in Italy, and Cecilia Bartoli, celebrating her 40th-year career at the Teatro Costanzi, the theater where she made her debut in Gioacchino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia. Both performances are presented as a single concert. Also performing on the Costanzi stage are Sonya Yoncheva, Marina Rebeka, Ermonela Jaho, Angela Meade, Ludovic Tézier, Brian Jagde, Francesco Meli, Vittorio Grigolo, Dave Monaco, Xabier Anduaga, Jennifer Larmore, Vasilisa Beržhanskaya, Ekaterine Semenchuk, Jessica Pratt, Lawrence Brownlee, Michele Pertusi, Daniela Barcellona, Alex Esposito, and Nicola Alaimo. Alongside Michele Mariotti, other notable conductors include Juraj Valčuha, Henrik Nánási, Gianluca Capuano, Nicola Luisotti, Daniel Oren, Riccardo Frizza, Francesco Lanzillotta, Giacomo Sagripanti, Marco Angius, and Alessandro De Marchi.

The dance program is also extensive, ranging from the great classical repertoire to reinterpretations of 20th-century masters and contemporary creations, confirming the Teatro Nazionale's international vocation. The program features key choreographers such as John Neumeier with Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony, Wayne McGregor, Alexander Ekman, and Nicolas Blanc in the triptych Motus, alongside Benjamin Pech, who opens the season with Swan Lake. Minkus's Don Quixote returns, choreographed by Laurent Hilaire, while Jean-Guillaume Bart creates a new production of Raymonda. The contemporary program is rounded out by choreographies by Rafael Bonachela, Sharon Eyal, and Diego Tortelli, brought together in the triptych Echoes, which closes the dance season at the Teatro Nazionale. Great names in international dance, including Marianela Nuñez, Daniil Simkin, Fumi Kaneko, Vadim Muntagirov, Paul Marque, and, for the first time on the Costanzi stage, Alina Cojocaru, perform. The performances feature the artistic ensembles of the Rome Opera, the Orchestra, the Chorus conducted by Ciro Visco, and the Ballet Company under the direction of Eleonora Abbagnato.

The new season at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma offers a total of 12 new opera and dance productions, 11 operas, 2 concert operas, 7 ballets, 4 special events, and 2 Ballet Company tours.
