From 11 October to 1 November 2026, Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera returns to the stage of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in a new production, directed by Tatjana Gürbaca, marking her Italian debut.
Composed between 1890 and 1893, with a libretto by Arrigo Boito inspired mainly by William Shakespeare’s comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor, with some elements of Henry IV, Falstaff premiered at La Scala in Milan on 9 February 1983.
The opera, the composer's last work, tells the story of Sir John Falstaff, a vain, pleasure-seeking knight who, against the backdrop of Windsor during Henry IV's reign, pursues two women in a daring game of seduction. He sends the same letter to both, setting off a series of pranks, misunderstandings and acts of revenge.
On stage, with set design by Henrik Ahr, costumes by Silke Willrett and lighting by Stefano Bollinger, an international cast of outstanding artists - including baritone Luca Salsi (Falstaff), George Petean (Ford), Maria Agresta (Alice), Carmen Artaza (Mrs Page), Violeta Urmana (Mrs Quickly), Marina Monzò (Nannetta), Dave Monaco and Pietro Adaini (Fenton) – brings to life a charming and witty tale, accompanied by Verdi’s lively and refined music, performed by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, respectively conducted by Ciro Visco and Michele Mariotti.
