The latest edition of the Art Club exhibition series curated by Pier Paolo Pancotto for the French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici is dedicated to Eva Jospin, a fellow of the Academy in 2016-2017 and now one of the most acclaimed French artists on the international contemporary scene. For over fifteen years, Eva Jospin has been constructing visionary landscapes characterized by sophisticated aesthetic research and composed of ruins, plant motifs and fantastical architecture. In her often monumental installations, the dreamlike dimension intertwines with collective memory, taking the viewer on a sensory and mental journey.
The project marking her return to Villa Medici has been designed specifically for three highly symbolic spaces within the architectural complex: the Gypsothèque, Balthus’ former studio (where Balthus painted when he was director of the Villa), and Ferdinando de’ Medici’s Studiolo, also known as the “Salle aux oiseaux”, or “bird room”. In direct dialogue with the architecture and iconography of these rooms, Eva Jospin presents a selection of works made of bronze, cardboard and silk thread embroidery, materials emblematic of her poetics.
The exhibition also includes two videos: Carmontelle and Forêt (both from 2023), which amplify the sense of immersion in her imaginative universe. Works by Eva Jospin are accessible only on the guided tours.
