The Domenico Morelli. Imagining unseen things exhibition, curated by Chiara Stefani and Luisa Martorelli opens at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. The exhibition is an important opportunity to admire a large part of the artist's rich and heterogeneous fund together with other works also coming from other public institutions or private collections. It consists of about thirty paintings, nine sketches, nine sculptures, a corpus of 48 oil on wood tablets with landscape paintings made on the coast south of Naples, a large mixed media cartoon and a selection of no less than 160 works on paper, among the more than 800 sheets belonging to the Morelli collection inside the National Gallery.

From the exhibition it emerges how Domenico Morelli's paintings arise from a careful study of the "Real", since the painter, influenced by the artistic current of the Macchiaioli, blends realism and late romanticism. The wide range of techniques used by the artist on paper is also highlighted, ranging from the use of graphite, charcoal, sanguine and pastel, to watercolor and tempera in different shades.

Among the paintings on display, we recall that, for the first time since the beginning of the last century, the canvas of the unfinished painting The Troubadour among the nuns is being exhibited to the public, the object of an adequate conservation intervention by the students of the Central Institute for Restoration. After cleaning, the precious frames of the paintings appear again in the variety of their techniques: carved and decorated with pure gold leaf and mecca silver. We also point out the portraits characterized by psychological introspection and figures taken from European romantic literature - Count Lara, Lady Godiva, Torquato Tasso reading the Gerusalemme Liberata to Eleonora d'Este - or the motifs linked to the Christian religion such as The obsessed, The corpse of Santa Maria Egiziaca found by the angels, and The Monks (or Good Friday). Some graphic works also document how his gaze gradually turned towards the East - where the painter, among other things, never went - showing a particular interest in its customs and practices related to the Muslim religion.

A series of sculptures in marble, bronze and terracotta by artists of the time - such as Alfonso Balzico, Adriano Cecioni, Giovanni Focardi, Giacomo Ginotti, Achille D'Orsi, Vincenzo Gemito, Domenico Trentacoste, Giuseppe Renda, Mario Rutelli - is related with Morelli's paintings often attesting to his influence. Finally, some works on canvas by other painters - Gioacchino Toma, Eduardo Dalbono, Achille Talarico, Gaetano Previati, Paolo Vetri - and a pastel by Francesco Paolo Michetti, are placed in dialogue with the artist's compositional solutions.
