The concert at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, part of the Symphonic Music Season of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, features conductor Daniele Gatti and, as soloist, the young Austrian pianist Lukas Sternath, winner of the prestigious 63rd Ferruccio Busoni International Competition.
The evening, marked by Romanticism, includes Johannes Brahms's Variations on a Theme by Haydn and Symphony No. 3, the latter one of Brahms's finest works, counterbalanced by the serene expressiveness of Robert Schumann's Piano Concert.
The Variations on a theme of Haydn, composed in 1873, as well as being a “homage” by the great German composer to Haydn, represent an attitude of research towards the history of music and its compositional techniques, studied and assimilated with the idea of a possible use in a completely different historical and cultural context.
The Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90, in four movements, was written in 1883 - six years after his Second - and premiered that same year. The Symphony No. 3, despite being less complex than his other symphonies, is characterized by its richness of inspiration and varied orchestration and it emerges as a composition imbued with pathos and tragic heroism.
The Piano Concert in A minor, Op. 54, composed between 1840 and 1845, is Schumann's only completed piano concert. It is distinguished by its three movements: Allegro affettuoso, Intermezzo: Andantino grazioso, and Allegro vivace, characterized by an intense dialogue between soloist and orchestra; it can indeed be considered one of the composer's most intense works.
Daniele Gatti was Music Director of the Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia and has a bond and affinity with the Roman ensemble that is renewed with each collaboration.
