Appia Day 2024

Ninth edition of Appia Day, the widespread festival of the Regina Viarum set since 2016 in the most significant places of the Roman consular road, with the extraordinary and free opening of monuments and many events between Rome and Brindisi, to experience archaeology and the territory on foot and by bicycle.

Appia Day is the ideal opportunity to celebrate the charm and enchantment of the Appian Way, UNESCO World Heritage 2024, and to imagine it as the gateway to a new idea of a city that invests in its territory, culture, and landscape and is more attentive to its citizens, more modern, greener, more liveable, and healthier.

Appia Day will also feature ArcheoGRAB, 20 kilometres in legs for pedestrians and pedal pushers, with guided tours, open monuments and refreshment spots, among the wonders of the Appian Way archaeological area. ArcheoGRAB develops through seven stages in as many symbolic places and monuments of the area: Colosseum, Arch of Drusus, Ex Cartiera Latina, Cenotaph of Annia Regilla, Via Latina Tombs, Aqueducts Laghetto, Villa of the Quintili, Santa Maria Nova, Mausoleum of Caecilia Metella. At the seven main points of the route, you will also find the Appia Day volunteers' stalls with information material for the campaign.

ArcheoGRAB is a mixed route that runs for the most part within green areas and restricted traffic roads, with some short stretches on urban roads even with high traffic density.

  • On foot: the walking time is about 4 hours excluding the tour stops. It is certainly a nice way to admire the magnificence of the places crossed and to take the whole day for an immersion in the Great Beauty of Rome. In this case, we recommend comfortable shoes, appropriate clothing and a full water bottle, although there are frequent bars and drinking fountains along the route.
  • By bicycle: this is definitely the most effective way. It allows you to fully enjoy the landscape along the route while maintaining a reasonable journey time (about 2 hours). The ArcheoGRAB is easily covered by bicycle and is almost entirely flat except for two short uphill stretches where the less equipped will be forced to get off the pedals for a few minutes.

Please note: the route also runs in small parts along urban roads. In particular, it involves crossing the Appia Nuova, a traffic-intensive artery, twice. We recommend particular caution.

The Appian Way was an original model of road connection capable of uniting Rome with distant territories. More than 2000 years later - with Appia Day - it is once again an extraordinary link capable of uniting archaeological, landscape, environmental and cultural values.

Appia Day offers hundreds of events for all tastes, thanks to the extraordinary and free opening of monuments, guided tours, nature walks accompanied by historical descriptions of the places, trekking, cyclotours, music, theatre, recreational activities for children, tastings, exhibitions and cultural and thematic meetings.
