An exhibition dedicated to itineraries for pilgrims and travelers in the city of Rome through the centuries, from the end of the 16th century to the present day.
At the end of the Jubilee Year, the Vallicelliana Library is exhibiting a selection of its bibliographic and iconographic items to the public in the majestic setting of the Salone Borromini, allowing visitors to discover and explore the historical and symbolic significance of the Christian Jubilee and Rome’s central role as a privileged pilgrimage destination.
The exhibition, which is free to enter, is divided into two thematic sections: “Jubilee and Seven Churches” and “The Image of Rome”. The starting point of the exhibition is the manuscript “G 34, Agevole sentiero per l’Anno Santo”, a guide with an elegant illustrated title page created for the Jubilee of 1575, the first after the Council of Trent. The volume, dedicated to city administrators, was intended to help them better organise the reception of pilgrims and the usability of the city.
In addition to precious manuscripts, the Salone Borromini displays volumes and maps from the Library’s antique printed collection, a decorated cane from the 17th century and photographs from the late 19th century: diverse materials that help to create new “easy pathways” for visiting and understanding the Eternal City.
