140th Italian Gallop Derby and Derby Day

On Sunday, 21 May, the Ippodromo delle Capannelle hosts the 140th Italian Gallop Derby and Derby Day: 140 years of history for a unique and unmissable event. The Derby is the day of days, the race that comes only once in a horse's career and which offers both a name in the roll of honor and a place in history.

The 140th Italian Gallop Derby is the essence of this discipline, a mesmerizing show and an unrepeatable opportunity to see the best horses face off in the last act of a long season: just over a 120 seconds run at breakneck speed to decree the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat, a thin border that embodies the superb beauty of horse racing.

The 140th Italian Gallop Derby is the most significant event of Derby Day. The afternoon, then, offers an outstanding programme with the Carlo D'alessio Award, group III race reserved for the elderly horses on the classic distance of 2400 meters, the President of the Republic Campus Biomedical Award, group II for the elderly horses aged four and over on 1800, and the Italian Gallop Derby.

The other races scheduled are the Tudini Prize, a listed race for 3-year-old horses over a distance of 1200 metres, the Alessandro Perrone Prize, another listed race with two-year-old females as protagonists over 1100 metres, the Mauro Sbarigia Prize, the last listed of the day for the three years on the mile, the traditional Edmondo Botti Prize, valuable HP for the elderly horses on 2400 metres, the Domenico and Sergio Arnaldi Prize, open to gentlemen and riders, and the eagerly awaited Fegentri Lady Riders World Prize, for female riders only.

The legendary Lanfranco Dettori mounts Vero Atleta in the 140th Italian Gallop Derby. He is also the protagonist in the Campus Bio-Medico President of the Republic Award with See Hector and in the D'Alessio Award to guide Tempesti to success.

The galloping boasts international guests such as Skalleti, Relentless Voyager, Lips Freedom, Sirjan, and Winning Spirit. Among the Italian horses, the stars of this 140th Derby are Enigma dei Grif and Vero Atleta.

The last edition of the Derby saw the duel between Arkadan and Tempesti, won by the German horse in the sprint. This year, the pretenders to success are many more and ready for a huge battle.
