Ninfeo di via Amba Aradam

The entrance at the monument can be obtained from inside the archives of the Vicariato or from a drain along the road, in fact the nymphaeum is 7.50 metres below the road surface, halfway between the municipal and the Vatican property.

In 1962, during the construction of a building of the Vicariate, at the corner of Via dei Laterani and Via Amba Aradam, the remains of a small nymphaeum of the so-called basilica plan type were discovered, consisting of a central room followed by an apse and two smaller rooms at the sides.

The first phase of the complex dates back to the Julio-Claudian period, to which some remains of vitreous paste mosaics can be attributed.

In later times, probably during the 3rd century A.D., the rooms were modified and painted with floral motifs, some of which are still well preserved.
