A very old parish in the Regola district (6th-7th century), the church owes its name to the fact that it is situated on a small rise.
It was rebuilt during the pontificate of Paschal II in the early 12th century. Transformed under Clement XI in 1715, the church was restored by Francesco Azzurri in 1860.
The 18th-century façade by Matteo Sassi has two orders: the first has a gate leading into the atrium, the second a large arched balcony window.
The interior has a three-nave plan with three chapels on each side. In the medieval apse is a fragment of a 12th-century mosaic with the face of the Redeemer. The church contains works by Italian artists such as Mariani, Carracci (Flagellation), Ruspi, Cariani and Conca. A 14th-century wooden crucifix is kept in one of the chapels.
