The masterpieces of cinema are back with the exhibition Some Like Classic at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, with screenings only on film, a fragile support which has an undoubted charm; the festival, now in its thirteenth edition, as in previous editions, is enriched by the contribution of the National Union of Italian Film Critics - Lazio Region Group, thanks to which each title is introduced to viewers by a historical and critical presentation.
The program, broad and varied, ranges across different eras, styles and countries: if in fact we find a masterpiece of Hollywood's golden age such as High Sierra by Raoul Walsh, the first major production with Humphrey Bogart as the protagonist and a film that marks the transition from gangster cinema to noir, genre, or the other noir Odds Against Tomorrow by Robert Wise which is characterized by important social themes such as that of the racial question, different is Stella Dallas by King Vidor, with an extraordinary Barbara Stanwyck, where there is a realist portrait of the society of the time. Always for American cinema we highlight Lady Windermere's Fan by Lubitsch based on the comedy of the same name by Oscar Wilde, considered his best film of the silent years, and two exemplary titles from the New American Cinema and New Hollywood seasons: the irreverent Flaming Creatures by Jack Smith and Taxi Driver by Martin Scorsese, which continues to be a cult film even after almost fifty years.
From French cinema we remember Au hasard Balthazar by Luc Bresson, a film considered among the most important ever made, while British cinema is represented by How I Won the War by Richard Lester, with an unreleased John Lennon, and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimpby the Powell and Pressburger couple, their first Technicolor film, presented in its entirety. The event closes with the little jewel to be rediscovered: Nusumareta yokujō (Stolen desire), the debut film by one of the masters of Japanese cinema, Shōhei Imamura.
