In the magnificent scene of the ancient Baths of Caracalla, La traviata, the masterpiece in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi in the staging signed in 2018 by Lorenzo Mariani, returns to the stage.
One of Verdi's best-loved operas, on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, is inspired by the play La dame aux Camélias (1852) by Alexandre Dumas' son, initially titled Violetta, and was first performed at La Fenice Theatre in Venice on 6 March 1853.
The production is characterised by the grand tradition of melodrama and glamour. The famous opera is presented in a setting reminiscent of Fellini, in an imaginary world of the 1960s and evokes the atmosphere of the Roman 'Dolce Vita', transforming Violetta, Verdi's most romantic female figure, into a glamorous film star.
On stage, Francesca Dotto, several times Violetta's interpreter at the Costanzi, Christopher Maltman and Marco Caria as Giorgio Germont, Giovanni Sala and Alessandro Scotto di Luzio as Alfredo Germont, accompanied by the Opera Theatre Chorus and Orchestra, conducted respectively by Ciro Visco and Paolo Arrivabeni.
The event is one of the two masterpieces of the so-called popular trilogy that the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma is presenting in the year of VIVA Verdi, the project promoted by the Ministry of Culture to safeguard, promote and enhance Villa Verdi, the composer's house-museum in Sant'Agata di Villanova sull'Arda.
