Amaro Freitas

The Teatro Studio Borgna at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone will host for the first time a world-class jazz talent who has established himself on the international scene for “an approach to the keyboard so unique that it’s startling” (Downbeat). Grown up in the slums of Recife in Brazil’s North-East, Amaro Freitas has worked tirelessly to become the artist he is today, committing himself from his earliest days to the aesthetic renewal of his country’s instrumental music.

The personal and balanced expressive kaleidoscope that characterizes his musical output makes him one of the most representative exponents of Brazilian jazz and, by far, one of the leading names in contemporary jazz pianism. The young pianist’s debut and sophomore albums, 2016’s Sangue Negro, with which the artist had already managed to distinguish himself for refined rhythmic-harmonic complexity, followed two years later by the refined Rasif, arrived on a wave of instant acclaim, propelling him to international prominence and into the jazz elite.

His new album Sankofa, from 2021, however, is his most sincere and successful work, a deep spiritual quest into the forgotten stories, ancient philosophies and inspirational figures of Black Brazil.
