Chris Soal. Spillovers: Notes on a Phenomenological Ecology

Spillovers MAXXI Chris Soal Foto di Olivia Rainaldi

An unpublished collection of site-specific artworks that intertwine sculpture, biology and ecology: the Corner MAXXI spaces is hosting the first major solo exhibition in Italy by Chris Soal, born in Johannesburg in 1994 and considered one of the most interesting artists on the contemporary scene.

The exhibition is curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi and produced by the D’ARC Foundation in collaboration with Piero Atchugarry Gallery and Montoro12 Gallery. It takes visitors on a journey through a creative process centered on the concept of “spillover”: the spillover of materials, which become something else; of perception, which transcends boundaries and categories; of the imagination, which opens up from the inorganic to the biological.

The protagonists of the installations presented to the public are materials expelled from the production system and reintegrated into a new life cycle, beyond the very concept of reuse. Everyday and industrial items, such as toothpicks, bottle caps, cement and sandpaper, lose their original function and are transformed into new forms. Expanding like growing bodies, changing in the light, breathing together with the visitor, sculptures, surfaces and structures disorientate and fascinate and only reveal themselves for what they are when viewed up close – a collection of humble elements, assembled with rigor and poetic imagination to question consumption patterns and invite reflection on the interconnection between natural, cultural and perceptual systems.
