Fountain in Piazza del Viminale

Fontana di piazza del Viminale

The fountain was built in 1929 on a reworked project by Publio Morbiducci, initially presented for Piazza Mastro Giorgio in Testaccio, where, instead, the Fountain of the Amphorae by Pietro Lombardi was built, later moved to Piazza dell’Emporio.

Finally, it was decided to place the work in front of the imposing Palazzo del Viminale, built by the architect Manfredo Manfredi between 1911 and 1919, and house the Ministry of the Interior. At the same time, with the rearrangement of the entire square, Morbiducci also designed the eagles with wings spread - placed on the columns that delimit the access ramps to the building - and the seats of the hemicycles.

The fountain has a mixtilinear basin - located at a lower level than the street level - at the centre of which rises a large base, decorated with bas-reliefs depicting the Capitoline Wolf, the turreted crown and the hills of the Rione Monti coat of arms. Above, from a large quadrangular basin, the jets of water slide into the lower basin, flowing along the base.
