Let’s go to the seaside! The official start of the 2024 bathing season on the beaches of Rome

from 3 May 2024 to 30 September 2024

In addition to its charming millenary history, Rome has a marvelous “seaside soul”, a whole coastline of enchanting beaches which are just a few kilometers away from the city. With the ordinance signed by the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, the 2024 bathing season on the Roman coast officially began on 1 May, and will end on 30 September. As usual, the ordinance establishes general rules and prohibitions for those who wish to spend a day at the beach and for the managers of the bathing resorts, regulating access and services for free beaches and those under concession.

Bathing resorts and facilities: operating hours and services

The time slot for bathing and the opening of services at the bathing resorts is, as a rule, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Bars and restaurants may be open to the public until 3 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, and until 2 a.m. on the remaining weekdays. The concessionaires of the bathing resorts must guarantee the safety of people and the protection of the environment by providing an efficient assistance and rescue service, informing on the bathing state of the water, delimiting the licensed beach with environmentally friendly materials, and taking care of its cleanliness

Free access to the foreshore, prohibitions and rules to respect

Public access to the sea (10 in all) must be signposted by the owners of the bathing resorts and facilities with clearly visible signs in several languages. Access to the foreshore is also free from the entrances of the bathing establishments. On all beaches, including free ones, there are a number of prohibitions. It is not possible, for example, to camp or pitch tents, campers or caravans; to occupy the strip of sand (at least 5 meters from the shoreline), with beach umbrellas, deckchairs, or anything else; to abandon rubbish; to light fires or cookers in areas other than those used as kitchens; to anchor or leave boats outside the designated areas, except for those intended for hire or for assistance or rescue operations. Finally, those who wish to go to the beach with their pet have the free Ostia Ponente beach at their disposal for the 2024 bathing season.
