Sotto l’Angelo di Castello 2023

Sant'Angelo Castle is the magnificent setting of one of the most evocative summer events, now in its third edition, part of the activities of the Directorate of the State Museums of the City of Rome.

The dance, music and entertainment festival represents a trait d’union between art places and art itself and, this year, presents numerous site-specific projects that bring the museum and its history into dialogue with contemporary creation.

Sotto l'Angelo di Castello (Under the Angel of the Castle), curated and organized by Anna Selvi, opens on 29 June with WE, the Angel, a dance show specially created for Saint Angel Castle by Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten of ICK Dans Amsterdam.

On stage, two world-premiere works, in collaboration with the Fuori Programma Festival: the installation by the multidisciplinary artist Thomas Bradley, inspired by a text engraved under the statue of one of the angels placed on the Sant'Angelo Bridge, and View > Rome by Michele Di Stefano and Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch, a project dedicated to the city and the perspective vision of the urban landscape.

Great space for music, from jazz to Latin rhythms, from classical music to contemporary sounds: Hernán Genovese presents the concert La voce del tango together with Roger Helou (piano), Damian Foretic (bandoneon) and the Masters and dancers Paola Palaia and Marco Evola. David Trio & friends (Claudio Trovajoli - on piano, Nikita Boriso-Glebsky - on violin and David Cohen - on cello) with William Chiquito Henao on violin and Raffaele Mallozzi on viola perform two masterpieces by Arensky and Dvorák, whereas Davide 'Boosta' Dileo, Subsonica keyboardist, presents Post Piano Session, his latest recording project. Cuban singer and cellist Ana Carla Maza and her musicians propose Caribe, a mix of jazz, classical music and Latin sound. Tatiana Eva-Marie celebrates the music of guitarist Django Reinhardt, inventor of Gypsy Jazz, with the album Djangology. L’Architettura del suono. Il violoncello, la “voce umana” tra nuove e antiche strutture formali sees Gaetano Simone with his Italian cello from the 1700s playing music by J.S. Bach, I. Xenakis, G. Crumb.

The rich program includes poetic narrations, theatrical and dance performances that give life to an unprecedented experience of the spaces of the Castle: from La delicatezza del poco e del niente, in which Roberto Latini reads and interprets some confidences of the poet Mariangela Gualtieri, to the site -specific works such as Dialogo Terzo: IN A LANDSCAPE, by the CollettivO CineticO company with choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni, and Take me up, take me higher by Enzo Cosimi, dedicated to four iconic figures of Roman darkness and its prisons: Beatrice Cenci, Cagliostro, the Archangel Michael and Tosca. Gastronomy and theater mix in Pasticceri. Io e mio fratello Roberto, the show with Roberto Abbiati and Leonardo Capuano, while family fun is guaranteed with Michele Cafaggi and his Fish&Bubbles, clowning show, games with water and giant soap bubbles, and Esercizi di fantasia of the Sosta Palmizi company, inspired by the work of Gianni Rodari.
The event closes with Satiri, a new production by Virgilio Sieni, in which the two dancers, Jari Boldrini and Maurizio Giunti, perform to Bach's music played by the Irish cellist Naomi Berrill.
