The famous opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi Il Rigoletto is scheduled for the summer season of the Baths of Caracalla, directed by Damiano Michieletto and conducted by Riccardo Frizza.
The opera, based on Victor Hugo's drama Le Roi s'amuse, together with Il trovatore (1853) and La traviata (1853) forms the so-called "popular trilogy" by Verdi, and tells the story of Rigoletto, jester at the Duke's court of Mantua, who tries to protect his daughter Gilda from the designs of the Duke, but ends up causing her tragic death. The first performance of the melodrama in three acts dates back to 1851 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
The main performers are Roberto Frontali, already Rigoletto in 2020 at the Circus Maximus, Nina Minasyan (Gilda), Piero Pretti (Duke of Mantua), as well as Martina Belli and Riccardo Zanellato who return as in 2020 respectively in the role of Maddalena and Sparafucile.
