Selected in 2021 among the emerging talents of contemporary dance by the Aerowaves network, German choreographer Moritz Ostruschnjak lands at the Romaeuropa Festival presenting the Italian premiere of his latest production at the Teatro Vascello, an explosive performance for eight dancers and 500 fan scarves that explores the boundaries between fandom, politics and protest.
As an active member of the German graffiti sprayer scene, Moritz Ostruschnjak developed his interest in contemporary dance through breakdancing. After studying at Iwanson International in Munich, he completed his training at the Béjart Ballet in Lausanne. Since 2013, he has been working as a freelance choreographer in Munich, where he has created a total of ten original productions, which have been presented at numerous festivals. He was awarded the City of Munich’s Förderpreis Tanz, and is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and Tanztendenz München.
On stage, amid an accumulation of sporting symbols, provincial slogans and global catchphrases, dancers dressed in jeans and T-shirts move through stadium chants, match footage, images of riots, mascots, and flares. Their choreography transforms the fervor of the terraces into a collective and identity-driven physical language. The scarves become masks, flags, weapons, and prayer mats, shaping a constantly shifting visual space, while the body becomes a space of both celebration and confrontation.
