The show La Bayadère-The Kingdom of Shadows is staged at the Auditorium Parco della Musica with choreography by Michele Di Stefano.
The one-act ballet for 12 dancers - originally in 4 acts and 7 scenes - was first performed at the Bolshoi Theater in St. Petersburg in 1877, with choreography by Marius Petipa and music by Ludwig Minkus.
La Bayadère is a typical example of romantic ballet: it is in fact a work imbued with idealized exoticism, both in the melodramatic plot and for the feminine ideal that it embodies. In Michele Di Stefano's choreography, his most famous scene, The Kingdom of Shadows, is represented, according to tradition, on the borderline between the real world and the afterlife, where the shadows that appear are frozen in their tragic condition and the movements they perform are rituals, thus becoming pure movement, abstract in its formal simplicity, in the interweaving of bodies and their trajectories. Designed for an ensemble of young talents, this new Kingdom of Shadows so mysterious and full of suggestions, thus appears always current and more than ever linked to a contemporary aesthetic.
