The Church has always had a special relationship with art, which is like a sail that is filled with the Spirit and makes one go forward.
On 23 June 2023, during the meeting on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the modern art collection of the Vatican Museums, in the beautiful setting of the Sistine Chapel, Pope Francis addressed the assembled artists with these words:
You artists, then, have the capacity to dream up new versions of the world. The ability to introduce novelty into history. You are a bit like prophets. You know how to look at things both in depth and in the distance, like sentinels who narrow their eyes to scan the horizon and fathom reality beyond appearances.
Art has always been linked to the experience of beauty. In true beauty one thus begins to feel a longing for God.
