Stanislav Kochanovsky conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in the Christmas Concert - Fairy tales in music and in Tchaikovsky's The Snow Maiden ("Snegurochka"), stage music for the comedy by A.N. Ostrovskij - first performance in the concerts of the Academy.
The Snow Maiden is an allegorical fairy tale linked to Russian folklore, which describes the transformation from winter to spring, with the sacrifice of a mythological maiden, Snegurochka. Daughter of Spring and Frost and raised in a frozen forest, the young woman is the victim of a spell that prevents her from falling in love, at the cost of her life. So when that happens, hit by a ray of sunshine, she vanishes and dies. Performed for the first time in 1873, the opera was an immediate success.
Stanislav Kochanovsky was born and studied in St. Petersburg and is now considered one of the most brilliant emerging Russian conductors; in addition to a deep knowledge of both symphonic and operatic repertoire, gained during his years at the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Kochanovsky has a keen interest in rarely performed operas.
