It was built in 1960 on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Rome to facilitate the connection between the Via Olimpica and the sport facilities in the Acqua Acetosa area. It rests on 7 reinforced concrete arches and is 72 m (80 yd) long and 27 m (30 yd) wide. The name is suggested by an ancient guard tower that was located at the fifth (quinto) mile of the Via Cassia, not far from the Tiber river.
