Extraordinary archaeological discovery on the Palatine Hill in Rome. During a series of investigations carried out by the Archaeological Superintendence of Rome on the Palatine, a cave with a vault covered in mosaics and shells was located, which archaeologists believe to be the Lupercale, the shrine of the origins, the legendary place where the she-wolf protected Romulus and Remus. The underground building discovered by the probes has a central plan with a diameter of 6.56 metres and a height of 7.13 metres. The vault is sumptuously decorated, with a geometric motif imitating a lacunar covering in stucco or paint.
Information
The building, at the present underground, cannot be visited.
Archaeological excavations are planned for this area of the Palatine.
