In the 17th century the area was the garden of the Casino Belvedere of the powerful noblewoman Olimpia Maildailchini-Pamphilij, sister-in-law of Pope Innocent X. It was embellished with rare plants, vines and fruit trees, especially citrus fruits, the beauty of which can still be enjoyed today.
Of the many sculptures and water features that decorated it, all that remains today is the Fountain with Snail and Dolphins, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1652.
