Chiesa di Santa Marcella

Located in Piazza Nicoloso da Recco, in the Ostiense district, not far from the San Cosimato monastery and the Ostiense station.
The Church of St Marcella was built in the 20th century to plans by architect Leonardo Del Bufalo, and is a parish church, established on 13 May 1958 by decree Qua celeritate of Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara. The place of worship is dedicated to Marcella of Rome, a Roman widow who converted to Christianity and followed the teachings of St Jerome.
The church of St Marcella has a distinctive hexagonal plan with a women's gallery along the side walls and the counter façade. The building contains two altarpieces by Marcello Ercole, an artist from Abruzzo who exhibited at the IX Quadriennale Nazionale d'Arte in Rome in 1965, and a fresco by the painter Dilvo Lotti on the counter-façade wall, in which elements of Christian symbolism (loaves, fish, anchor) and references to Gospel episodes are highlighted. A large crucifix hangs on the back wall in the chancel area. The latter is raised a few steps above the rest of the church and houses the marble altar in the centre.

Characteristic is the high concrete bell tower flanking the church.

On the women's gallery in the counter façade is the Mascioni pipe organ opus 962, built in 1973.

The instrument is electrically driven and its console is located on the floor in the nave, and has two keyboards of 61 notes each and a concave-radial pedalboard of 32 notes. The phonic material is enclosed within a simple geometrically designed case with an exhibition made up of main reeds outside the case, arranged in a palisade with mitered mouths.
