Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni Evangelista e Petronio dei Bolognesi

In 1575, the community of Bolognese residents in Rome established a Confraternity to assist their fellow citizens. Recognized the following year by Gregory XIII and dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, the Confraternity erected a new church to replace a pre-existing one that had belonged to the Spanish community. Work began in 1582 based on a design by Ottaviano Nonni, known as Il Mascherino, but was not completed until the mid-17th century, and the church was dedicated to Saints John the Evangelist and Petronius. The façade was built between 1696 and 1700. In 1810, the Confraternity was suppressed and the church used as a warehouse. It was only restored in 1873, after the Confraternity was reconstituted. The single-story façade features an entrance portal surrounded by pairs of Corinthian pilasters, surmounted by a large rectangular window. On both sides are two portals surmounted by two windows and a circular oculus. The interior has a Greek cross plan with side chapels and a domed roof. On the right altar, note the Death of Saint Joseph by Francesco Gessi, while on the left altar is the processional painting by Marcantonio Franceschini for the canonization (1712) of Saint Catherine of Bologna painted on both sides. The high altar until 1813 featured the large altarpiece by Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino, The Madonna and Child with Titular Saints and Angels, requisitioned by Napoleon and now in the Galleria d'Arte Antica in Palazzo Barberini in Rome.
