Othello, one of William Shakespeare's most loved and well-known works, is on stage at the Quirino Theater directed by Andrea Baracco.
The tragedy (with the original title The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice), written around 1604 and probably performed in the same year, is inspired by a short story by the Italian writer and playwright Giovan Battista Giraldi Cinzio. The plot revolves around the jealousy of Othello, a courageous military leader of the Republic of Venice, for his beloved Desdemona who, due to Iago's insinuations, is suspected of having an affair with Cassio. The story focuses on Othello's interior torments and psychology, which lead to misunderstandings with Desdemona, a prelude to the final murder-suicide. In fact, thanks to this tragedy, Othello has over time become a sort of archetype of loving passion which, diverted by jealousy, leads to self-destruction.
In the show at the Quirino all the power of the Othello-Iago-Desdemona triangle emerges, as well as of the character of Iago and his ability to generate evil: this Shakespearean tragedy in fact, leads us to a deep reflection on human weaknesses, on that area of shadow that lies within each of us.
