Antonio Pappano returns to the podium of the Auditorium Parco della Musica to conduct the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia in Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem, accompanied by extraordinary performers such as, among others, the Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanca - in her Cecilian debut - and the Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov.
The work, for choir, solo voices and orchestra, was composed by Verdi in 1874, following the death of his compatriot Alessandro Manzoni, which occurred the previous year. In fact, Verdi, like Manzoni, was committed to the unity of Italy and therefore shared with him those values of justice and freedom typical of the Italian Risorgimento. The Requiem was then performed on the occasion of the first anniversary of Manzoni's death, on 22 May 1874, in the Church of San Marco in Milan. The fundamental themes of this work are certainly that of spirituality, the search for faith, the fear of death and what awaits us afterwards; and above all of the fear that in the afterlife there is nothing but nothingness.
With Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha (soprano), Elīna Garanca (mezzo-soprano), Seok Jong Baek (tenor), Ildar Abdrazakov (bass), choir master Andrea Secchi.
The concert is dedicated to the memory of Claudio Abbado.
