The multidisciplinary arts festival Romaeuropa Festival is back in town: the 38th edition, entitled Geography of the Arts, represents an "atlas of contemporary creativity" dedicated to the strength of the arts and their ability to cross geographical and temporal boundaries. On the schedule, 90 shows, 300 performances, and more than 500 artists from 34 countries for over two months of programming in 13 spaces in Rome between music, dance, theatre, new circus, creation for children and digital arts.

The festival opens on 6 and 7 September en plein air in the Cavea of ​​the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone with Ukiyo-e, the first choreography signed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui for the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. The opening week continues with the techno legend Jeff Mills and musicians Jean-Phi Dary and Prabhu Edouard and the return of the choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker with Creation 23.

Many big names in cinema, music, dance and theatre will be present. Among them: the director Ivo van Hove who directs Isabelle Huppert in The Glass Menagerie at the Teatro Argentina; the Anglo-Bengali choreographer Akram Khan with his Jungle Book Reimagined; the director Susanne Kennedy who presents her latest production Angela (A strange loop ), together with the visual artist Markus Selg; the Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble, together with the director and performer Massimo Popolizio, with L'imbalsamatoreGiocoso da camera monodrama and An index of Metals; the French hip hop icon Bintou Dembélé in Rite de passage at Villa Medici. The REF pays homage to two great masters: Peter Brook, one year after his death, with his latest production Tempest Project; Franco Battiato, with an exclusive concert of the artist's avant-garde classic compositions. On the stage, the union of traditional music, folklore, theatre and world rhythms with the Kiev folk quartet DahkaBrakha with an anti-war song.

REF2023 edition presents itself as one of the richest ever. The festival is divided into different sections and combined with a program for families with talks, meetings and activities.

GENERATIONS AND LANGUAGES - The dialogue between generations and the alternation between the big names on the international scene and new proposals marks the rhythm of the Romaeuropa Festival 2023, drawing the boundaries of artistic languages ​​and the codes of dance and theatre. Among the guests are the Greek Christos Papadopoulos, the choreographer Kat Válastur with the female vocal group Pleiades, the Italian-Spanish collective Kor'sia, Francesca Pennini with her company CollettivO CineticO, the Apulian company VicoQuartoMazzini and the director Fabiana Iacozzilli. Also present were the historic English company Forced Entertainment and the master of storytelling theatre Ascanio Celestini.

STORIES AND TRADITIONS - Real and imaginary geographies overlap in the artists' visions, outlining paths oriented towards the future but built on the comparison between histories, identities and traditions. On stage, the acclaimed director Milo Rau, New Zealand choreographer and director Lemi Ponifasio, Choy Ka Fai, "dantzari" Jon Maya and "bailaor" Andrés Marín, duo Igor & Moreno, choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly, Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura and the rising star of African dance Qudus Onikeku.

A GEOGRAPHY OF SOUNDS - Music returns to cross the entire edition of REF2023 through contamination, electronics and the contemporary repertoire with the double presence of the prestigious Ensemble Modern of Frankfurt, together with the chef-star Daniel Gottschlich and the icon Alva Noto. Focus on  electronic experimentation with some of the most acclaimed international artists such as Caterina Barbieri, the eclectic Australian producer and musician Ben Frost, Plaid and Tovel (aka Matteo Franceschini). Musical theatre is also the protagonist with the Greek director Elli Papakonstantinou and the eclectic musician Ariah Lester, the director Luigi De Angelis with the American singer Claron McFadden and Muziektheater Transparant, the producer and pianist Dario Bassolino and the director Rosario Sparno. On stage are also the pianist and composer Fabrizio Ottaviucci, the Atom String Quartet performing with the jazzist Leszek Możdżer, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with the rock star of piano virtuosity Simon Ghraichy and the composer Jacopo Baboni Schilingi.

MATTATOIO – A MAP FOR THE FUTURE - The Pelanda of Mattatoio in Testaccio represents the heart of the paths and the map of the festival, with the setting up of four performance halls, the installation and meeting area, the reception and box offices and a new dining area. Here, the different festival sections develop. LineUp! is scheduled in three days dedicated to the music of the current Italian pop scene, DJ sets and meetings between musicians and writers. Digitalive focuses on musical, choreographic and virtual itineraries. The REF special projects section includes VR performances, the day dedicated to graphic design, the new format about theatre, music, stand-up comedy and impromptu poetry. Two sections are dedicated to new generations: Anni Luce to Italian theatre under 30 artists, Dancing Days to the Italian and European choreographers and dancers. This latter also hosts DNAppunti Coreografici, the final of the call for emerging artists in the sector. Established for the first year by the Silvio d'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art together with Romaeuropa is the "Silvio d'Amico" Directing Award dedicated to the students of the Academy. The "Vivo d'Arte" prize awards rising creativity and is dedicated to Italian artists permanently residing abroad.

A MAP OF CREATION FOR CHILDREN - In November, the Kids & Family section transforms the Mattatoio into a space for children and their families. FuturoPresente is the focus dedicated to creation for Dutch children, featuring the companies Het Filiaal theatermakers, Het Houten Huis and Meneer Monster. On the program, the new Quattrox4 circus company, Roberto Abbiati and the Playground, the space with installations, performances and artist games, the area dedicated to wooden games, the Sonora Workshop made with recycled material, the laboratory of stop-motion and the special musical and performative carousel La Dinamica del Controvento by Teatro Necessario.

THE GRAND FINALE - On 19 November, the Grand Finale of the Romaeuropa Festival 2023 occupies all the halls of the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone in a day dedicated to the contamination and new sounds of the African continent featuring Onikeku, Ballaké Sissoko in dialogue with the acclaimed composer and sound artist Lorenzo Bianchi, the “desert blues” star Bombino, and icon Fatoumata Diawara.
The festival continues beyond its ending with a special extra appointment presented by the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, which sees on stage the Chinese composer and conductor, Unesco Ambassador, Grammy Award, Oscar and Golden Lion Tan Dun, on the podium to conduct the Orchestra and Chorus of the Academy in his visionary Buddha Passion.
