The Symphony No. 9 in D minor for soloists, chorus and orchestra op.125 by Ludwig van Beethoven is performed by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Rome Opera House conducted by Myung-Whun Chung in the wonderful scenery of Caracalla Baths.
Also known as Choral Symphony, it is the last symphony of the great German composer. Performed for the first time in 1824, it is composed of three purely symphonic movements followed by a fourth which includes the chorus on the verses of the ode To Joy by Friedrich Schiller. It is one of the best known and most performed works in the entire classical repertoire and is considered one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of music, also as a universal symbol of unity and brotherhood among men.
With: Olga Bezsmertna (soprano), Sara Mingardo (mezzo-soprano), Giovanni Sala (tenor), Roberto Tagliavini (bass); Choirmaster Ciro Visco.
