Forte Portuense was built along the street of the same name, to control and defend the area to the south on the right of the Tiber.
The Fort was used since the 1910s as a depot for artillery material, then also as the site of some artillery posts built for the air defence of Rome in the late 1930s. Decommissioned by the military authorities in 1967, following the insistence of the neighbourhood committees for over twenty years, it was then handed over in 1998 to the XV district, now the XI Municipality.
