Unexpected Italy awarded as best startup combating overtourism in Rome Future Week 2024

from 1 October 2024 to 31 December 2024

Protecting monuments and preserving the city’s cultural identity by enhancing alternative itineraries is one of the priorities highlighted by Roma Capitale’s Councillor for Tourism and Major Events Alessandro Onorato. Because while tourism is a resource and an asset, overtourism can be a serious problem in a city that has seen record numbers of visitors in recent years, destined to grow further during the Jubilee year.

There are innovative solutions that can counteract overtourism while creating value for the city. The original model based on solid technological expertise proposed by travel tech startup “Unexpected Italy” is what earned it the Rome Startup Award, the important recognition given during the second edition of Rome Future Week®, the event dedicated to technological innovations that took place in various venues from 16 to 22 September.

The app created by Elisabetta Faggiana and Savio Losito aims to take the tourist off the big mass circuits, suggesting a tailored and more authentic tourist experience that makes travelers feel “local”. Users can choose on the app the model of traveler that best represents them (from the wine lover to the explorer, to those who prefer family or romantic vacations): based on their choice, the app will show on an interactive map iconic points, accommodation facilities, local artisans, markets and typical restaurants, building unexpected itineraries for responsible and inclusive tourism.

The platform is available in Italian and English and is directed at an international audience, with a focus on European and US tourists.
