Inside the basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina, the six concerts of Laurentino July are held every Saturday in July, presented by Maestro Michele F. Loda. This year too, as in previous ones, the broad program ranges from baroque to contemporary music.
San Lorenzo in Lucina is located in the Colonna district, not far from Palazzo Montecitorio, and is one of the oldest churches in Rome. The building stands on a domus, probably owned by Lucina, a rich Roman matron who founded an "ecclesia domestica", a place intended for worship inside a private home. Consecrated as a place of worship in 440 AD. by Pope Sixtus III, the church was rebuilt and enlarged in the 12th century by Pope Pasquale II. Even today, we can admire the elegant portico marked by six Ionic granite columns, inside which we can read a series of ancient inscriptions, the two marble lions on the sides of the entrance and the five-order bell tower, two floors of single-lancet windows and three of mullioned windows.
