Leveraging the knowledge derived from space and aerospace research to protect the historical and artistic heritage in a cost-effective way: the new web platform adopted by the Colosseum Archaeological Park was born precisely from the collaboration with the Italian Space Agency - ASI, one of the world’s most important players in satellite technologies and exploration of the cosmos.
SyPEAH, the acronym for System for the Protection and Education of Archaeological Heritage, uses innovative low-impact monitoring techniques, such as remote sensing and satellite methodologies from drones and from the ground. Thanks to specially developed algorithms, the new system is able to assess site vulnerabilities from a qualitative and quantitative point of view, predicting the risks to which the environment and monuments are exposed, due to, for example, climate change and critical weather phenomena, still capable of causing irreversible damage, and mitigating their effects.
The platform enables the preparation of planned interventions to ensure sustainable management of the area. To manage the information on the platform, SyPEAH uses a Decision Support System (DSS), a simple and intuitive tool that reports to the monitoring laboratory established in the Park, equipped with a specially designed data processing center.
