At the beginning of July, three new routes to the Holy Door were inaugurated, starting from Piazza del Risorgimento, Piazza Pia and Piazza Sant’Uffizio. What makes them special are the materials and information supports that accompany them, created with respect for people’s different communication methods to offer everyone the opportunity to experience an accessible and inclusive Jubilee. These include: large footprints applied to the pavement to guide pilgrims to St. Peter’s Basilica; visual-tactile and talking paper maps with drawings and relief profiles that can also be explored by touch, Braille writing, texts that can also be read by the visually impaired or people with dyslexia thanks to the Test Me font, an appropriate font size and correct color contrast, and videos in different languages and sign language.
Each of the three maps created for the three different routes features two QR codes that link to two web pages with welcome videos and explanatory videos about the route. Texts, audio and videos explain how to get to the Colonnade of St. Peter’s, where the rest areas, drinking fountains, toilets and special assistance services are located, all in Italian and English, in Italian and international sign language, in Easy-to-Read Italian and English (simplified language regulated by the European Union) and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication in pictograms).
All texts are also available online: the Guides can be downloaded in PDF format from the website https://www.accoglienzagiubileo.it/mappe-accessibili-giubileo-benvenuti/.
