Rome to host first Euro Mediterranean Water Forum

from 18 June 2024 to 31 October 2024

“Regina aquarum”, “queen of waters”, was one of the names by which Rome was known in antiquity. The city was born from water, on the banks and in the valley of the river Tiber, and ponds, pools, underground springs, fountains, thermal baths and aqueducts – surprising works of art and engineering – testify to the deep-rooted bond that Rome has had with such a precious and vital resource since its origins.

In order to address the many issues related to the access to and management of water sources in today’s world and to discuss the most innovative technologies and the most appropriate policies to preserve and protect them, Rome has been chosen to host the first Euro Mediterranean Water Forum to be held in October 2026. For the first time, the forum will involve all the European and Balkan countries in addition to the countries of the Mediterranean area and will be accompanied by various events such as meetings, events and workshops.

Rome’s candidacy as host city was supported by the “One Water” Committee, which in Italy brings together institutions, important associations and the Earth and Water Agenda Foundation (EWA). The city’s choice is in recognition of the work carried out by the city administration on the issue of water, starting with the containment of problems caused by climate change, the maintenance of all the networks in the area, reducing losses and, above all, the realization of an important work such as the second tunnel of the Peschiera aqueduct.
