ENIT opens to the public its historical archive of Italian tourism

Turismo anni 60@ENIT
from 21 May 2021 to 31 December 2021

The priceless cultural heritage of the Ente Nazionale del Turismo Italiano, established in 1919, the year the institution was founded, is now visible to all and continuously updated as the finds reappear.

Over 160 thousand between slides, posters, and photos to be surveyed and digitized. The works are those Enit commissioned and produced between the 1920s and 1970s in line with its mission: passionate people abroad and make Italy known as a tourist destination of excellence.

As the reorganization of the powerful archive proceeds, the recovery of the art posters is being carried out. The works represent an astonishing series of visions of the most picturesque places in the country depicted by famous artists in their natural poetry and in the splendor of the arts. Unfortunately, over the years, many of them have gone lost.

For this reason, the Agenzia Nazionale del Turismo Agency searches for uncensored assets that are part of the art collections of individuals and galleries.

The opening of the archive to the public, therefore, becomes an indispensable opportunity to reconstruct the large poster production of the Agency and to create a single centralized source telling the story of Italy through its cultural heritage.

To view a work, you just need a simple or advanced search by entering the type, author, or date of interest. Once selected, you can ask to receive it in high definition by clicking on Info download after a preliminary investigation regarding the purposes of use, which must comply with current legislation and the institutional mission.

In addition to the posters, you can find photos with extracts from the film documentary works commissioned by Enit to the famous Italian director Luciano Emmer and the advertising campaigns signed by the 1930s-40s-1950s best designers.

By now, about 20 thousand records, including posters, photos, slides, negatives, slides, and publishing, have been digitized. The completion of digitization is scheduled for 2023.
