80 years after the Red Army entered the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp on 27 January 1945, Roma Capitale celebrates the Holocaust Memorial Day for the victims of the Shoah, the massacre of the Jewish people, and of the persecution, imprisonment and death in the Nazi concentration camps of Sinti and Roma, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, military personnel, and opponents of fascism and Nazism from all over Europe, with a calendar of over 40 initiatives promoted by the Assessorato alla Cultura as part of the Memoria genera Futuro project.
Exhibitions, meetings, guided tours, book presentations, concerts, shows and film screenings will animate twenty-four cultural spaces spread throughout the territory, to promote knowledge and memory on the tragedy of Nazi-fascism and to bring to life in the present the values of equality, justice, freedom, respect for life and human dignity at the basis of our democracy and civil coexistence and against all forms of oppression and discrimination.
The initiative was made possible thanks to the commitment of the city's main institutions, local and national associations and the many male and female scholars, writers and artists who will be taking part.
There will be numerous appointments aimed at students from schools in Rome and many others remotely connected from all over Italy, including the meeting with Sami Modiano, on Friday 24 January at 11 a.m. at the Teatro Argentina, organised by the Fondazione Teatro di Roma - Teatro Nazionale and the Fondazione Museo della Shoah-ETS.
The meeting with Sami Modiano is a unique opportunity to listen to the voice of an extraordinary witness of the Shoah, who in his book Così siamo diventati fratelli recounts his friendship with Piero Terracina, which saved them in those terrible moments of captivity.
Finally, the visual layout of Memoria genera Futuro, which will accompany the programme communication, will be flanked by a specific multilingual campaign inspired by Primo Levi and the value and significance of his testimony.
‘Memoria genera Futuro 2025’ is promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura, with the coordination of the Dipartimento Attività Culturali, in collaboration with the Istituzione Sistema Biblioteche e Centri Culturali, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and other city institutions: Fondazione Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Fondazione Cinema per Roma, Fondazione Musica per Roma, Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, Fondazione Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Fondazione Teatro di Roma - Teatro Nazionale and also Jewish Community of Rome - Centro di Cultura Ebraico, Centro Ebraico Il Pitigliani, Fondazione Museo della Shoah, Istituto Polacco di Roma, UCEI - Unione delle Comunità Ebraiche Italiane, the Associazioni della Casa della Memoria e della Storia, Teatro Biblioteca Quarticciolo, Teatro del Lido di Ostia, Teatro Tor Bella Monaca, Teatro Villa Pamphilj.
