A unique and innovative itinerary articulated in four thematic areas that merge past and present, culture, art, science and technology. Realized by Fondazione MAXXI and Med-Or Italian Foundation, in collaboration with Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, Telespazio, e-GEOS, European Space Agency, the exhibition hosted in MAXXI’s spazio EXTRA is a journey through the millennial history of the Great Sea that unites Europe, Africa and Asia, from the ancient civilizations that inhabited it to the present day, with the actual economic, environmental and geopolitical challenges.
Previously unseen satellite images, extraordinary photographs, videos and immersive installations dialogue with archaeological finds, ancient maps and works of art, from the MAXXI collection and institutions such as the Museo delle Civiltà, the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, the Museo Nazionale Romano, the Società Geografica Italiana, and the Regione Siciliana - Soprintendenza del Mare. The exhibitions highlights beauties and pitfalls, lights and shadows of the “sea that lies between lands”, a bridge between different civilizations, cultures and languages, but also a vulnerable and complex reality, with its fertile coasts and islands that have always been tourist destinations but in the past have sometimes been places of exile and today a landing place for migrants.
The project is promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Culture.
