An itinerary to discover one of the most incisive poetics in contemporary photographic culture. Realized in collaboration with the Archivio Guido Guidi, the monographic exhibition set up in MAXXI’s Gallery 1 is the result of intense research work conducted alongside the photographer, one of the greatest protagonists of Italian landscape photography, in his studio and archive in Ronta di Cesena.
The more than 400 works on display, the numerous previously unpublished works and the showcases with precious archive materials (notebooks, documents, books, proofs, paintings, cameras) make it possible to retrace Guido Guidi’s professional career, from the beginnings and experiments of the 1960s and 1970s, to the personal research and commissions on the landscape of the 1980s and 1990s, to the most recent projects of the 2000s. Each image conceals a reflection on the act of seeing, on the medium used to record it, and on the passage of time, regardless of whether his gaze is focused on a fragment of familiar, on everyday landscape, on the architecture of the great masters, or whether his visual message is to be conveyed through his photographs and the teaching activity in which he has been engaged since the 1980s, to the point of being considered a “master” by several generations of authors.
The exhibition, realized in collaboration with important Italian and international institutions that have supported Guidi’s work over time, such as the ICCD and the CCA, intends to approach Guidi's research from an unprecedented point of observation, that of his archive: home, artist’s studio, place of work, life and meeting place for young authors.
