After the success of past editions, the great event of May dedicated to art, organized by ICOM (International Council of Museums), returns with the shared theme of Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing.
For the occasion, the Capitoline Superintendence proposes a rich program of free initiatives and appointments in the civic museums of Rome. During the day, extraordinary openings, guided tours, workshops, and tactile and LIS (Italian Sign Language) visits are on the schedule.
International Museum Day 2023 is also the opportunity to present the audio/video guide LIS - Italian Sign Language - of the Pinacoteca Capitolina, ten episodes, available on the Capitoline Museums website, to make the immense historical-artistic heritage of the Gallery accessible to everyone, to explore the site before or during the visit.
Among the numerous appointments available are the two exhibitions at the Rome Modern Art Gallery, where the artist Liana Miuccio accompanies the public within Visual Diary, and at the Museum of Roma in Trastevere, where a preview of the photographic exhibition dedicated to Peggy Kleiber is on the schedule.
Nature is the protagonist at the Museum of Zoology, which focuses attention on the importance of conserving biodiversity also for future generations, while greenery, art and well-being are at the centre of the visit to discover the history and fascinating facts at the Casino Nobile, the Casina delle Civette and the Serra Moresca in Villa Torlonia. The Villa of Maxentius and the Museum of the Walls are exceptionally open in the late afternoon to enjoy the colours of the sunset, accompanied by the archaeologists of the Capitoline Superintendence.
History, sustainability and society are the common thread of the activities in the Casal de' Pazzi Museum, which offers visits and workshops to learn how Prehistory can teach us how to live sustainably; the Napoleonic Museum, with a path on leisure and well-being between the late 18th and early 20th century; the Museum of the Roman Republic and Garibaldi Memorial with 'Occhio al trucco!', which explains how history can involve and build community. A guided tour at the Trajan's Markets shows how the museum deals with hospitality and accessibility to reach all audiences.
On the program are also a tactile guided tour of the ongoing exhibition Colours of the Romans. Mosaics from the Capitoline Collections at the Centrale Montemartini and an integrated visit for persons with or without vision impairment to the Museum of Rome at Palazzo Braschi, proposing an immersive experience to explore the myth of Perseus and Andromeda.
There is also an online appointment: the Carlo Bilotti Museum offers 'Arte in un click' (Art just a click away), an insight into the masterpieces preserved inside one of the oldest buildings in Villa Borghese.
