The Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament, more widely known as the Bingham Cup, is the world championships of gay and inclusive rugby. It was first organized in 2002 and is named after the gay rugby player who died on 11 September 2001 on board United flight 93 after fighting back against hijackers along with other passengers. It has been played every two years since then to celebrate and promote equality and diversity in sports, and challenge stereotypes of the LGBTQ+ community.
Today, the Bingham Cup is one of the largest and most participated amateur tournaments globally, involving hundreds of IGR (International Gay Rugby) affiliated teams from five continents. Rome is hosting the tournament for the first time, which will celebrate its 11th edition. The Bingham Cup 2024 sees the participation of 3,500 rugby players and more than 100 teams, ready to compete on eight fields located in the EUR district area: Tre Fontane Stadium (Via delle Tre Fontane 5); Dabliu EUR (Viale Egeo 98); Rugby Roma Olimpic (Via di Tor Pagnotta 351); Alfredo Berra Stadium (Via Giuseppe Veratti); Corviale Rugby Stadium (Via Degli Alagno 37); Polisportiva Ostiense (Lungotevere Dante 3).
The matches of the Bingham Cup - Rome 2024 are scheduled from 23 to 26 May, from 8 am 7 pm (last kick-off at 6 pm); the official opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday 22 May at 7.30 pm at the Palazzetto dello Sport.
