Now in its 19th edition, the event has been confirmed over the years as an unmissable opportunity to visit museums, galleries, foundations, artist studios, exhibition spaces, and public and private art venues, which have freely decided to join this stimulating initiative to present and enhance the different contemporary languages.
Il Giorno del Contemporaneo, promoted by AMACI - Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums, follows the common thread of ecology and sustainability and sees the 24 museums of the association and about 1,000 realities throughout the country opening for free their doors to the public with a rich program of exhibitions, events, in presence and online workshops.
Binta Diaw, a young and talented Italian-Senegalese artist, created the guiding image, born from in-depth research that addressed the relationship between the black female body and the traces of colonialism in current society. Pa(y)sage Corporel (2023) takes inspiration from a popular saying in the Wolof language of the Senegalese tradition: Nit nitay garabam, which means human beings is the care for human beings, even if the term garab has two meanings, plant and medicine /treatment. Through her poetic visual interpretation of the proverb, Diaw highlights the indissoluble union between humans and Nature, as well as the need to take care of what is around us.
Furthermore, from 7 to 13 October, Giornata del Contemporaneo - Italian Contemporary Art is back: the foreign network of the MAECI, and in particular Italian Cultural Institutes abroad, Embassies and Consulates, promote Italian creativity outside our borders.
The event benefits from the support of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, the collaboration of the Directorate-General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the patronage of the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces, UPI – Union of Italian Provinces, ANCI – National Association of Italian Municipalities, ICOM Italia.
