Officially started with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica on 24 December 2024, the Jubilee 2025 is the 27th ordinary universal jubilee in the history of the Church and the second jubilee celebrated by the current pontiff after the extraordinary one in 2015.
The entire jubilee period is characterized by a rich calendar of religious, cultural and social events. Aside from celebrations and rituals addressed to all the faithful, the Holy Year’s program includes several “jubilees” dedicated to different categories of people, identified according to specific professions or their role within the family, the Church and society. Each one includes moments of dialogue and spirituality, with a concluding mass celebrated by the pope.
The days from 30 May to 1 June are dedicated to families, children, grandparents and the elderly. The celebrations will start on Friday 30 May. From 8 am to 5 pm it will be possible to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door, with the option of confession in the Jubilee churches. From 4 pm to 7.30 pm, the Church Santissima Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps) will host concerts, shows and games for children, with the possibility of venerating the relics of St. Therese of Lisieux and her parents, and, at 9 pm, a prayer vigil. From 6 pm, the panel exhibition “The surprising nature of generosity” will open to the public in the Cloister of San Salvatore in Lauro. The program for Saturday 31 May will include in the morning entertainment in the city squares, a catechesis on the theme of old age at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere and the thematic conference “The Family Global Compact and the international network of family associations” at the Lumsa University. From 6.30 to 8 pm, Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano will host a Family Celebration and Prayer Vigil with recitation of the Rosary to close the Marian month of May. Also on Saturday it will be possible to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door and receive the confession in the Jubilee churches. The Jubilee of Families, Children, Grandparents and the Elderly will close on Sunday 1 June with the traditional mass presided over by the pontiff or his delegate: entrance to St Peter’s Square is completely free on this occasion and does not require any type of ticket.
