The church, formerly dedicated to S. Maria in Publico assumed its new name in Publicolis in honour of the Santacroce family who had it rebuilt by Giovanni Antonio De Rossi in 1643.
It is one of the oldest churches dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and the name means St Mary at the crossroads-of-three-streets.
