Rome’s new network of study spaces

A widespread and sustainable culture is the idea behind the project initiated by Roma Capitale, which is promoting the creation of a network of study, reading and sharing spaces complementary to libraries. Although coordinated by the Istituzione Biblioteche di Roma, the new study rooms are not, however, linked to the need to consult books in deposit: they have also been conceived as places where people can meet and socialize, and are therefore aimed primarily at the youngest, at the hundreds of thousands of students living in the capital.

A further innovation concerns the opening hours, which are more extensive than those of the library reading rooms: the study rooms, housed both in municipal facilities and in publicly or privately owned spaces, in a logic of synergy and cooperation with the civic-cultural fabric of the city, are often accessible in the evenings and on holidays. So far, five new study rooms have been set up in the space of a few months from the city center to the outskirts. The first municipal space inaugurated in the 18th-century Palazzo Braschi (open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) was followed by study rooms in the Centro Euclide, in the Parioli district, and in Montespaccato.

Finally, the last month has seen the opening of the Trionfale study room inside the structure that houses the Mercato Trionfale, one of the largest and most historic food markets in the city (open for the time being from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays); and the La Pelanda study room (open every day from 9.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.), whose set-up was supervised by the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo. Located inside the Mattatoio of Rome, in the Rione Testaccio, the La Pelanda study room is part of the more general design of redevelopment and enhancement of the area.
